Political Art in Digital Age

The following section aims to introduce the exhibitions and research based on the Practise- Based PhD thesis on "Political Art in Digital Age" of the Department of Audio and Visual Arts of the Ionian University. The PhD thesis on "Political Art in Digital Age" has been awarded a scholarship by H.F.R.I., Hellenic Foundation for Research & Innovation.

This dissertation aims at examining aspects of political art in the digital age, primarily through the production of artwork. The research focuses on the possibilities provided by digital technologies for the creation of digital artworks and mainly interactive installations that raise political issues and attempt social intervention (activism). Methodologically, the doctoral research is registered in the field of art practice as research.
At a first level, the research focuses on mapping the field of art practices that employ digital media and are politically targeted. Emphasis will be placed on the artistic practices applied in the digital space in the last two decades, as well as on the possibility of specific practices for interaction with the viewer/participant. This mapping contributes to the formation of the theoretical tools that will be employed to create the new artwork, in reality the center of this research.
At a second level, activating the principles of art practice as research produces work that seeks to answer how modern digital media can broaden the meaning of the political in their contact with the public. The main role in this is played by the "democratization" of digital media, both through the dissemination they have to the public (Walter Benjamin), and through the creation of affordable projects, made of digital materials that do not raise production cost or with the reuse of technological waste –a gesture that is in opposition with the popular tactics of digital media that require constant updating.
As an expected result, in addition to the production of artwork itself, I seek to artistically explore the very concept of (digital) interaction, to relate it to politics, and to propo
se a new definition of it through new digital art formulations.

"SAFER/SUFFER"

With the message of the Civil Protection on the smartphones of the citizens of the territory, "Stay home, stay suffer", the installation investigates the wrong message, resulting in the word (Safer) sounding the same way which sounds (Suffer). On the facade of the building, the words Safer/Suffer are formed in alternation. One turns into the other, creating a pun that sums up the reflection of the days: safety that isolation offers us or our unbearable wait in a pause of duration? Essentially, the play on words intensifies the condition that the modern citizen experiences in the regime of prohibition and restriction, cauterizing the removal of dividing lines between safety and the pain of confinement. The activation of the alternation of the words on the facade of the building happens every time someone scans a quick response code(QRcode)which is located in busy parts of the city. After the interaction you give access to an open dialogue, where everyone can post anonymously.
